Chatham High School once again tops the NJ Monthly school rankings for the second issue in a row! NJ Monthly publishes their school rankings every other year, and Chatham was named #1 in both 2014 and 2016.

How the Best Schools are Determined

According to the article, which hit newsstands on August 24, NJ Monthly changed their criteria for this year’s list. This makes the repeat #1 ranking even more impressive for Chatham. Schools were rated based on three main categories:

  1. School Environment – includes the number of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes offered and how many students take at least one AP or IB test. It also includes the percentage of students enrolled in at least one visual or performing arts class.
  2. Student Performance – includes the number of students scoring 1550 or above on the SATs, 3 or higher on AP tests and 4 or higher on IB tests.
  3. Student Outcomes – includes graduation rates and the number of students still enrolled in college 16 months after graduation.

Scores are based on data reported to the state Department of Education by the schools. For the first time this year, participation of students in arts classes contributed to a school’s overall rating. Student performance weighted slightly more heavily in the rankings. A total of 337 public and charter high schools were included in the statewide list. The complete list is now available online.

Other Sue Adler Team Towns Make the Top 20

The Sue Adler Team serves some of the best communities in New Jersey, so it’s no surprise to see many of our schools round out the Top 20. Following Chatham at #1, other Mid-Town Direct Train Line Towns making the list include:

4 – Millburn / Short Hills

6 – Livingston

8 – Westfield

13 – New Providence

18 – Summit

19 – Governor Livingston (Berkeley Heights)

Towns along the Mid-Town Direct Train Line have some of the highest real estate values in the region. They are among the most sought-after places to live in New Jersey, no doubt due to the excellent schools, picturesque communities and easy commute to New York City. Residents are invested in quality of life, and it is reflected not only in the educational opportunities available for students, but also in community-wide resources like city parks, summer camp programs and cultural venues.

Our Schools Also Rate Tops in the Nation

Newsweek also recently released their rankings of the top public high schools in America, and many of these same schools made the list, with Chatham coming in strong at #40 (Nationwide). Principal Darren Groh of Chatham High School believes his students’ success is a result of strong support from the community, and a school environment that focuses on after-school activities and college readiness. These same qualities are found in many of our area’s top-rated schools.
