The mission of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is simply four words: Today’s Care. Tomorrow’s Cure. These words reflect the purpose of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to provide hope for individuals living with paralysis. The Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving quality of life for those living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy. Christopher Reeve had an unrelenting drive to pursue the best research in the world, and his brilliance attracted young scientists to take on the cause and advance the field of spinal cord research. Dana Reeve was not just a model caregiver, but left the legacy of the creation of the Paralysis Resource Center that has reached so many of those living with paralysis and their families with life-changing resources.

Here are 5 things that you should know about The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and what they do:

  1. Since 1982, The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation has awarded nearly $120 million to accelerate scientific breakthroughs across the field to find cures for spinal cord injury. To achieve this goal, collaboration is required between the most renowned minds in neuroscience. The Foundation supports a range of research programs that bring together scientific leaders from different disciplines to speed the delivery of therapies and treatments for spinal cord injuries.
  2. The Reeve Foundation’s NeuroRecovery Network (NRN) supports cutting-edge clinical rehabilitation centers and community fitness and wellness centers, which make up two branches of care for people living with spinal cord injury and other physical disabilities. Funded by the Reeve Foundation and a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living, the NRN moves science into clinical practice by developing and providing activity-based therapies that promote functional recovery and improve health and quality of life.
  3. The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation employs the relatively new therapy of Locomotor Training, which is used for people with brain and spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological disorders. In the past, rehabilitation was about teaching the body to work around the functions lost. We now know that rehabilitation is a key part of recovery with well-documented changes that range from standing and stepping to improved health and quality of life. This stems from significant advances in our understanding or how the brain and spinal cord are wired and their capacity to rewire after injury and disease as a result of locomotor, or activity-based therapies.
  4. In 2002, The Reeve Foundation Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) opened its doors thanks to the leadership and vision of Dana Reeve. Through the PRC, the Foundation offers a free, comprehensive, national source of informational support for people living with paralysis and their caregivers, with the intent of fostering involvement in the community, promoting health and improving quality of life.
  5. According to a 2013 study, there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis – approximately 5.4 million people. By demonstrating the sheer impact of paralysis across the nation, from a health, societal, and financial perspective, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is creating a framework to keep their mission moving forward – to enhance quality of life and find cures for paralysis in the here-and-now.
