Living In New Providence

Situated on the western slope of the Watchung Mountains and an approximate one-hour train ride from Midtown Manhattan, New Providence is a small town with a lot of charm. Known for hilly tree-lined streets, beautiful parks, and outstanding schools, residents enjoy the feeling of community that comes from living in a small town while enjoying all the benefits of the New York City metropolitan area. Perfect for families, because of a number of excellent hiking trails, bike paths, fishing streams, observation blinds and other activities found in town or the surrounding area, including the 2,000+ acre historical Watchung Reservation, residents spend a lot of time outdoors. There is also an action packed social calendar thanks to an array of festivals, summer concert series, street fairs and the annual fishing derby.

The New Providence School District has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence. Frequently distinguished by awards and acknowledgments, the District consists of two elementary schools, Allen W. Roberts and Salt Brook, New Providence Middle School and New Providence High School, which was recently named a National Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education. Salt Brook Elementary was recognized as a School of Character, selected on its strength of outstanding work in encouraging ethical, academic and social growth. The District offers extensive services for student support alongside an array of extracurricular activities, including multiple boys and girls sports teams, advanced courses and an enriching summer program that is run by a dedicated team of education professionals.

New Providence’s downtown business district owes its success to its’ Business and Professional Association, a group of merchants and professionals who have come together to make New Providence a premiere shopping destination. The Association sponsors and organizes a wonderful Farmer’s Market that sells fresh fruits, vegetables, pies, and specialty items. This exciting shopping district also offers boutique children and adult retailers, high-quality jewelry stores, salons, health clubs and spas.

With craft breweries, pizzerias, sub shops, bistros and independent cafes as well as fine dining New Providence residents have a variety of delicious dining options and cuisines at their fingertips to choose from. Zita’s Homemade Ice Cream is a popular family destination for locals on a hot summer night. Be warned though – lines may be up to 45 minutes long.
